Final report

AAI Advanced Course in Immunology 2016, Boston, MA

Dr. Maia S. Marin, National Scientific and Technical Research Council (CONICET), Argentina

I was selected and awarded to attend the AAI Advanced Course in Immunology, July 31 st-August 5, 2016, in the Seaport World Trade Center, in Boston, MA. This course is co-sponsored by American Association of Immunologists (AAI) and by the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS). The AAI provided me with registration and housing and was responsible for my wellbeing during the course. The IUIS Gender Equality Career Development Committees provided me with a special travel award to the meeting.

I consider myself really honored to have been selected and I want to sincerely thank the AAI and IUIS for this wonderful opportunity. In addition to the opportunity they gave me, which is of invaluable help for my research studies, I would like to express how very grateful I am with Dr. Olivera Finn (Chair from IUIS Gender Equality Career Development Committee), Dr. Michelle Letarte (Chair from IUIS Education Committee) and Dr. Mary Litzinger (Manager of Educational and Career Development Programs from AAI) for helping in coordinating all details of the trip and their kind treatment.

The organization of the course was excellent, and I very enjoy each day the scientific program that included lectures which let me to improve my knowledge about the latest advances in immunology. I had an amazing opportunity to know others researchers in different topics of immunology and to share my work and discuss the main findings. The knowledge and skills that I acquired in the course and the opportunity to discuss my own results with experts actually enhanced the understanding of the results on innate immunity experiments I had obtained. Undoubtedly it will drive new questions and new approaches that will help to broaden the perspectives of my project and line of investigation in my home laboratory.

My career plan as young researcher is mainly focused on a long-term program dedicated to discover and understand the roles of innate recognition and host defense peptides in animal health. The AAI Advanced Course in Immunology allowed me to obtain a much better insight into the current biological research, which in Argentina is still in its initial stages of development. Now, I can apply the new knowledge in my research field and transmit it to my colleagues at work. Therefore, once again I thank the AAI and IUIS for their full award, since it allowed me to attend this course and had this unforgettable experience.

Sincerely,

Dr. Maia S. Marin
